Many setup problems with a Huion tablet come down to the driver: the wrong one, a conflicting one, one that did not install cleanly, or one that installed fine but was never given the permissions it needs. This guide walks through installing and setting up a Huion driver properly on Windows and macOS, connecting the tablet, checking that everything works, configuring the pen and shortcut keys, and fixing the problems that come up most often.

Every step here is based on Huion's current official installation and support documentation. Where something varies by model or operating system, this guide says so rather than giving a single answer that will not apply to everyone.

What a Huion Driver Actually Does

Huion describes the driver as "a bridge between your drawing tablet and your computer." It is a piece of software you install on your computer, not on the tablet itself. Its job is to translate what the pen and the tablet's buttons are doing into something your creative software understands.

On many setups, a Huion pen will still move the cursor before the driver is installed, so the tablet can look like it is "working." Whether basic cursor movement works without the driver depends on your operating system and your specific model, so do not rely on it. What the driver adds is everything that makes it a drawing tablet: pressure sensitivity, tilt, the shortcut keys and dials, the ability to set the working area, and per-application settings. If pressure is not responding in your art software, an installed and correctly configured driver is almost always the first thing to check.

Before You Start: Identify Your Model and Operating System

You need two pieces of information before downloading anything:

Your exact tablet model. This is printed on the box, on a label on the tablet itself, and on your product page. Huion uses both a product name (for example Inspiroy H420X or Kamvas 16) and a model code (for example H420X or GS1563). The download page is organised by model, so the right driver is model-specific.
Your operating system and its version. On Windows, check whether you are on Windows 10 or 11. On macOS, check the exact version, and whether your Mac uses an Apple Silicon chip or an Intel one, since some driver behaviour and permission steps differ between macOS versions.

Do not assume every Huion tablet supports the same operating systems. Linux support in particular is available for some models and not others. Minimum supported Windows and macOS versions also vary by model, so check your model's own page rather than relying on a figure from a different product.

Where to Download the Driver

Download drivers only from Huion's official Download Center at huion.com/download. Do not install a driver that came from a third-party download site, a forum attachment, or a bundled disc, because those are frequently out of date or incorrect for your model.

The Download Center is organised in layers. First you choose a product category: Pen Tablet, Pen Display, Pen Computer, Smart Notebook, or Accessories. Then you choose your specific model. Then you choose your operating system: Windows, macOS, or Linux. Each download shows a "Date of Upgrade" so you can see how current it is.

The same page also links the User Manual for your model and, for some devices, a separate Firmware Update Tool. Huion states plainly that "the driver and firmware are not the same." The section on driver versus firmware later in this guide explains the difference and why it matters.

Preparing Your Computer

A clean install prevents most of the problems people run into. Before you run the installer:

Remove any other tablet driver first. Huion's guidance is direct: "If a tablet driver has been installed on your Windows computer (Huion driver or other brands), please uninstall it before installing the new one." This includes an older Huion driver, and drivers for Wacom, XP-Pen, Gaomon or any other brand. Two tablet drivers installed at once is one of the most common causes of a tablet that will not connect.
Restart your computer after uninstalling an old driver. This clears out files that are still in use.
Close all drawing and writing programs, such as Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, Krita or OneNote.
If, and only if, your antivirus or security software blocks the installer, pause it briefly. Some security tools interfere with parts of the installation. If that happens, pause the protection just long enough to install the driver, then re-enable it immediately afterward. If installation runs without being blocked, leave your security software on.
Do not connect the tablet yet. Huion's instructions say to install the driver first and only connect the device when the installer or driver panel asks you to.

Installing on Windows

Download the correct driver for your model from huion.com/download.
Extract the file. The download is compressed. Unzip it to a folder before trying to run anything.
Run the installer as administrator. Right-click the extracted installer file and choose "Run as administrator." Installing without administrator rights is a common reason the driver later fails to open.
Keep the default install location. Huion recommends not changing the default path. Click Install and let it finish.
When installation completes, connect your tablet to the computer.
Open the Huion driver. Your connected device should appear in the driver panel. On recent driver versions a small icon near the clock changes colour and the panel shows a "Device connected" status.

Installing on macOS

Download the latest driver for your model from huion.com/download.
Extract the file if it is compressed, then drag the "HuionTablet" icon into your Applications folder.
Open your Applications folder and double-click HuionTablet.
If macOS warns you about opening an app downloaded from the internet, choose Open.
Connect your Huion tablet when the app asks you to.
When prompted, click Open System Settings (this is called System Preferences on older versions of macOS) to grant the permissions described in the next section.
If macOS asks for Bluetooth permission, click OK. Huion notes this request can appear even for tablets that do not use Bluetooth.

Granting macOS Permissions

macOS blocks the driver from reading pen input until you approve it. This step is skipped surprisingly often, and it is the usual reason a freshly installed driver on a Mac shows the tablet as connected but produces no pressure.

Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security (on older macOS: System Preferences, then Security & Privacy, then the Privacy tab).
Accessibility is the key permission. Under Accessibility, tick the Huion driver in the list. Depending on your driver version it may be listed as "HuionTablet" or "TabletDriver." If this is not enabled, the pen will not work correctly.
Input Monitoring is only needed on some driver and macOS combinations. If your Privacy settings show an Input Monitoring section and it lists the Huion driver, tick it there as well. Huion notes that if your macOS version does not show an Input Monitoring section, you can skip it.
You may need to click the lock icon and enter an administrator password to make changes.

After you tick these, the driver may briefly show the tablet as disconnected while macOS applies the change, then return to "Device connected." Older macOS versions such as Mojave and Catalina had additional installation quirks, and Huion publishes model-specific guidance for those; if you are on an older system and the standard steps do not work, look for Huion's dedicated article for that macOS version.

Connecting the Device

Connection method depends on your tablet. A screenless pen tablet connects with a single USB cable or, on some models, wirelessly. A pen display usually needs both a video connection and a data connection, which may be a single USB-C cable on some models or a three-part cable (often called a 3-in-1 or 3-in-2 cable) that splits into HDMI, USB and power on others. Check your model's manual for its specific arrangement rather than assuming.

Points that resolve most connection failures, taken from Huion's support guidance:

Use a cable that carries data, not just power. A charging-only cable will power the tablet but the computer will not detect it.
Connect directly to the computer. Avoid USB hubs, docks and adapters where possible. If you must use one, try a direct connection first to rule the adapter out.
On a desktop, use a USB port on the back of the machine, which is wired directly to the motherboard.
On a pen display with a 3-in-1 or 3-in-2 cable, make sure the black USB cable is firmly seated in the computer, not just the HDMI or power connectors.
Do not use a wired and a wireless connection at the same time on tablets that support both.

Confirming the Driver Works

Once the driver is installed and the tablet is connected, open the driver panel and check three things:

The panel shows your device, usually as a picture or name of the tablet, with a "Device connected" status.
The pen moves the cursor across the whole screen.
Pressing harder with the pen produces a response. The driver includes a Pressure Test area for exactly this: draw a stroke in it and the line should get thicker or darker as you press harder.

If the device shows as connected but the pressure test does nothing, the driver is installed but not fully authorised or configured. On macOS this points back to the permissions step above. On Windows it is usually the pen or pressure settings, covered next.

Configuring Pen Pressure, Buttons and Shortcut Keys

The exact layout of the driver panel changes between driver versions, but recent versions group the settings the same way.

Digital Pen settings

Pressure Sensitivity. A slider, and on many versions a set of presets from soft to hard, let you match the pen response to how heavily you press. If your lines feel like they max out too quickly, move it toward "hard"; if you cannot get a light line, move it toward "soft." Use the built-in Pressure Test area to check as you adjust.
Pen buttons. Most Huion pens have two side buttons you can assign, for example to right-click, to an eraser toggle, or to a keyboard shortcut. You can also set whether the pen nib registers a click.
Enable Windows Ink (Windows only). This toggle changes how pressure is passed to some applications. If pressure works in the driver's own test but not in your art software on Windows, try switching this setting and restarting the application.
Mouse Mode and Game Mode change how the pen position maps to the screen. Leave both off for normal drawing.

Press keys, soft keys and dials

Press Key is where you assign the physical shortcut buttons on the tablet. There is an Enable Press Keys toggle; if it is off, the buttons do nothing.
Some models add soft keys (touch strips or on-screen keys) and a Dial Setting for the rotary dial, which can be set to default functions, media control, or a custom action such as brush size or zoom.

Setting Up the Work Area and Monitors

The Working Area section controls how the tablet surface maps to your screen.

Full Area is the default and the recommended starting point: the whole tablet surface maps to the whole screen.
Screen Ratio matches the tablet's active area to your monitor's aspect ratio, so a circle you draw comes out as a circle rather than an oval.
Custom Area lets you use only part of the tablet surface, which some people prefer for a smaller, more controlled drawing zone.

If you have more than one monitor, use this section to choose which display the pen controls.

For pen displays, there are two extra steps. First, make sure the driver is set to the pen display itself rather than a second monitor, so the cursor appears under your pen. Second, run the driver's monitor calibration: it shows a series of targets and you tap each one with the pen, which lines the pen tip up with the cursor. If your cursor sits slightly off from where the pen touches, calibration is the fix. The driver also has rotation options (0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees), with the 180-degree setting commonly used for a left-handed layout.

Testing Pen Pressure

Test in two places, in this order:

In the driver's own Pressure Test area. If pressure works here, the tablet and driver are fine and any remaining problem is in your software or its settings.
In your actual art software. Create a brush that is set to respond to pen pressure, then draw a slow stroke from light to heavy. The line should change width or opacity.

If pressure works in the driver test but not in your software: on Windows, try toggling Enable Windows Ink and restarting the app; in the app itself, check that the brush is set to use pen pressure and that any tablet or pointer setting inside the app is pointing at the right input. On macOS, re-check the Accessibility permission (and Input Monitoring if your macOS version lists it), and confirm the driver's background process is running.

Common Problems and How to Fix Them

If the driver is installed correctly and the tablet still is not detected, Huion's advice is to test the tablet on a second computer. If it works there, the problem is with the first computer's ports, cable or software rather than the tablet.

Driver Versus Firmware

These are two different things and it is worth being clear on which one you are dealing with.

The driver is software on your computer. It is what this guide is about. You update it by downloading a newer version from huion.com/download and installing it.
The firmware is software stored on the tablet itself. It is updated using a separate Firmware Update Tool, and only some models have firmware updates available at all.

Only run a firmware update if Huion's Download Center lists one for your exact model and there is a specific reason to apply it, such as a fix noted in the release notes. When you do, follow Huion's model-specific firmware instructions exactly, use a stable power and cable connection, and do not disconnect the tablet or interrupt the process before it reports that it has finished. An interrupted firmware update can leave a tablet in a state that needs Huion support to recover.

Windows, macOS and Linux Differences

Windows. Run the installer as administrator. The Enable Windows Ink toggle in the driver is Windows-only and is a frequent fix for pressure not working in specific applications.
macOS. The driver needs Accessibility permission before pen input works. Some driver and macOS-version combinations also ask for Input Monitoring; grant it there if that section appears and lists the driver. You may need to approve the app the first time you open it. The name shown in the permissions list can be "HuionTablet" or "TabletDriver" depending on the driver version, and older macOS releases have their own known install issues with Huion-published workarounds.
Linux. Huion currently documents Linux support for selected models, typically on Ubuntu, and provides installation packages in both .deb and .tar.xz formats. Installation is done from the command line rather than a graphical installer, and the settings interface can be more limited than on Windows or macOS. Check the Download Center for your specific model before assuming Linux is supported.
